Heads up is a form of poker that is played
between only two players. This situation can arise or result on three different
ways in a poker game:
- Through a betting round at a poker table, where all other players fold and only two remain playing the hand
- In a tournament, after all other players have been eliminated
- A special Heads Up Championship
The way to play Heads Up is totally
different. The reason for this is the change in probabilities and pot odds.
For example at a table with 10
players the probability that somebody holds a bigger pocket pair than your KK
pre flop is 0,0439 (1:23), whereas against only 1 player in heads up it is 0,0049
(1:204). Don’t forget, this heads up probability doesn’t apply to the 1st
point of the Heads Up situations above!
You’ll find that good players use
these odds to play more aggressively forcing their opponents to fold marginal
hands.
But think about this: “Any two cards
can win!” and the winning probability of the worst starting hand, 7 2 off suit is still 12% against pocket aces and
even 32,5% against A K off suit before the flop*. Surprising, isn’t it?
